As a trained and Certified Teacher of Cultivating Emotional Balance (CEB), I teach this highly effective evidenced-based and emotion-focused program to help people understand how to use their emotions as a path for developing authentic happiness for themselves and in relationship to others.
With CEB, participants learn to understand better their mental and emotional life as well as their embodied experience. The course teaches practical tools for working with emotion and emphasizes the development of inner resilience through meditation practice. CEB helps individuals develop greater awareness of their own and others’ emotional triggers and behaviors so they can create wiser choices when engaging with any emotional experience.
CEB began at the Mind and Life Conference in Dharamsala, India in 2000, where a group of behavioral scientists, Buddhist monks, philosophers and other scholars discussed with His Holiness the Dalai Lama the topic of Destructive Emotions. At the end of the meeting, the Dalai Lama requested the creation of a secular training to help people manage destructive emotions and cultivate a wholesome way of being. Dr. Paul Ekman, Dr. Alan Wallace, Dr. Mark Greenberg and Dr. Richard Davidson took on the challenge and started to develop a blueprint for the secular program. Dr. Paul Ekman, world-renowned psychologist, emotion researcher and Professor Emeritus at the University of California San Francisco, and Dr. Alan Wallace, a Buddhist Scholar and prolific writer, continued developing CEB with consultation from the original Mind and Life group.
CEB has been delivered since 2002 to people from all walks of life and working in a variety of industries around the globe including among others, healthcare, education, finance, and services. Participants learn both emotional skills and meditation skills, as CEB brings together the psychological component from the work of Dr. Paul Ekman and the contemplative component inspired by the work of Dr. Alan Wallace.
I was trained to teach CEB by Dr. Eve Ekman (daughter of Dr. Paul Ekman), Ryan Redman (meditation expert) and Venerable Tenzin Chogkyi (Buddhist nun and teacher). By integrating the wisdom from modern psychology, current emotion research, and contemplative practices, CEB provides a secular platform for transformation.
The CEB curriculum includes talks, experiential exercises, discussion and meditation practices. Participants find that the CEB tools help them grow their happiness and well-being, thus changing the relationship they have towards others and the planet as a whole.
